Nontron cutlery

Nontron cutlery, located in the Périgord Vert region, is a craft tradition of great historical importance. The Nontron knife is considered by specialists to be the finest in the world. oldest knife in France whose origins date back to the 15th century.
History and characteristics of the knife
The knife takes its name from the town where it was born, and its production is mentioned as early as the end of the 18th century. The identity of the Nontron knife was forged in the 19th century. It became an essential accessory for the farmers of the Périgord. The company has now been awarded the «Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant» (Living Heritage Company) label.
The main characteristics of the Nontron knife are :
- Boxwood handle Traditionally made from boxwood, a local tree, the handle is dried for at least four years. It can also be made from other precious woods or more modern materials.
- The blade The «sage leaf» shape is available in stainless steel (T12) or carbon steel (XC75). The blades are hot-forged and undergo various heat treatments to guarantee exceptional quality.
- Pyrography This is the unique signature of the knife. These hot-iron engraved motifs are made up of «flies» (a kind of inverted V framed by three dots) and rows of small dots. Their meaning remains a mystery: religious symbols, a reference to the Compagnons du Devoir or something else?
- The blocking system For folding knives, the blade is locked in the open position by a rotating brass ferrule.
Preserving traditional skills
Making a Nontron knife is still largely a traditional craft. From the cabinetmaker who preforms the handle using lathes to the assembly of the pieces, the skills are handed down from generation to generation. The site is also a showcase for the region's traditional skills.
