Discovering the heritage of the Green Périgord

Beyond its castles and villages, the Green Perigord is home to a wilder heritage, forged by nature itself. Walking through its forests and along its paths is the best way to discover its external treasures, where the stone and vegetation tell stories that go back thousands of years.
Geological curiosities and forgotten remains
Nature has sculpted the landscape of the Périgord Vert, leaving behind wonders that intrigue and fascinate.
- Le Roc Branlant Roc Branlant: At the Roc Branlant in Saint-Estèphe, the tradition is to swing this enormous block of granite to twist a coin slipped underneath. This unusual gesture, combining physical effort and mystery, is a quest for good luck, with the deformed coin acting as a good luck charm for the person guarding it.
- Megalithic sites The Périgord Vert is also home to open-air prehistoric remains, such as the Fixard menhir, located near Saint-Estèphe. Standing in the middle of a field, this imposing stone is a silent witness to human occupation of the region thousands of years ago. Other dolmens and menhirs, often hidden in the woods, dot the landscape, inviting you to explore in the footsteps of our ancestors.
- The caves : The interior of the country conceals some fascinating underground treasures. Visit Villars cave, located not far from Nontron, is a geological and prehistoric wonder. Here you can admire a succession of chambers decorated with exceptional concretions (stalactites, stalagmites), as well as an authentic site of prehistoric paintings. The entrance to the cave, often nestled in the heart of the forest, is an invitation to discover the mysteries of our subsoil.
- Ponds and forests The ponds of Saint-Estèphe, Tamniès and Coucou are perfect examples of the harmony between water, rock and forest. Designed for walking, they are sanctuaries of biodiversity. Discovering their natural heritage is a unique experience, where every tree, every rock and every waterhole is part of the story of the region.
This authentic, unspoilt outdoor heritage is the heart of the Périgord Vert. It's an invitation to hike and adventure, for a total immersion in the natural and human history of the region.
