The Piégut-Pluviers market: from history to the present day
The Piégut-Pluviers market, in the heart of the Périgord Vert region, is an emblematic event that has been going on for centuries. As far back as the Middle Ages, Piégut-Pluviers, a strategic village on the trade routes, hosted weekly fairs and markets where farmers and craftsmen traded their wares. These gatherings were essential to local economic life and helped forge links between neighbouring villages.
Over the centuries, the market has developed into a central place for social and commercial life. In the XIXᵉ century, it was structured around the central village square, with stalls selling local foodstuffs, clothing and craft tools. Residents of the surrounding hamlets regularly travelled to Piégut to sell their harvests or buy what they lacked.
Today, the Piégut-Pluviers market has kept this tradition alive. It is held every Wednesday morning, from 8am to 1pm, and attracts hundreds of local and tourist visitors. The stalls feature more than 100 stallholders in winter and up to 200 in summer, offering a wide range of produce: seasonal vegetables and fruit, local cheeses and charcuterie, local crafts, flowers, clothes and even a few farmyard animals.
Beyond the commercial aspect, the market has become a real place to meet and socialise. Visitors appreciate not only the diversity of products, but also the warm atmosphere, punctuated by the smells, colours and voices that tell the living history of the Périgord Vert. The Place Yves-Massy, around which the market is centred, remains the heart of the village, where locals and tourists meet in an authentic and festive atmosphere.
The Piégut-Pluviers market illustrates the continuity between past and present, a living heritage that continues to give rhythm to local life while offering visitors a glimpse of the culture and traditions of the Périgord.
